“In the beginning palang, sinabi ko na na school is priority,” aniya.

Lyrically, she’s speaking out more.

Right after Kitchie Nadal left Mojofly in June last year, her uplifting solos “Deliverance” and “Run” suddenly appeared on every radio station and major label compilation. “Watch me, don’t underestimate me, you’ve never seen me run, baby,” sings the 24-year old pop rock princess on the spirited single, “Run,” and now we surely will.

Kitchie hardly knew anything about music when she joined Mojofly on a whim three years ago. She only used to write songs and sing for friends at home. “I had a hard time also, I had to compromise,” she confides. Kitchie’s schooling was also strained by her new rock star life, and not wanting to compromise that, she left Mojofly for good to concentrate on her double degree in psychology and education. “In the beginning palang sinabi ko na na school is the priority,” she stresses. “Now, I can do things at my own pace.”

Kitchie stewed for a year, and found her own voice amidst Fionna Apple’s angst, Queen’s theatrics, and Skunk Anansie’s power. With these inspirations, it’s no wonder that her ten-track self-titled debut has taken on a rock edge.

And it isn’t just her musical direction that has gotten stronger. Lyrically, she’s speaking out more. “Gumising na, bumangon na pagka’t ‘di na ikaw ‘yung biktima,” she sings on “Bulong,” an anthemic song about people who refuse to do the right thing. In fact, most of Kitchie’s songs are tied to her positive spiritual life, one that’s guided by her faith and church family, the Victory Christian Fellowship. “I write songs as if they’re dreams; its not really clear pero may visual, parang ininterpret ko kung paano ako managinip.”

Bound by dreams, faith, and honest talent, Kitchie’s debut album is sure to become a pop rock favorite in the local OPM scene. It is co-produced and distributed by Warner Music Philippines and 12 Stone Records. It is available in leading music stores and record bars nationwide and online via Titik Pilipino.

Kitchie will be performing alongside other Warner Music celebrities like Paolo Santos, Nina, Christian Bautista, Pido, Dice&K9, Artstrong and Thor in the POP KO ‘TO The All Star, All Hits Concert on November 13 at 8:30pm at the Folk Arts Theater.

She likewise will be contributing a cover of The Carpenter’s “Merry Christmas Darling” to the Warner All Star Christmas Collection, a toasty album that lets 11 hot OPM pop talents, including acoustic pioneer Paolo Santos, soul siren Nina, hip-hop foursome Dice&K9, and romantic crooner Christian Bautista, rework classic and contemporary carols into the Christmas songs of today.
